Wanted to post up an invite to fish with me and a friend out by rollover pass this Sunday AND Monday coming up. I'm not going to be able to make the BEAT unfortunately Sad but I am gonna do some fishing.

The wave size and wind will be at a minimum - plus we will be getting a ridiculously strong outgoing tide. This all adds up to big reds and sharks.

If anyone is interested, pm me. I would be glad to have any yakers here join the trip. Also, good luck to all yall fishing Bastrop this weekend. Catch some monsters out there.

I would be here in a heartbeat man but just had surgery... I prefer redfishing to bass fishing any day, plus they taste better too.

I've got to say, I'd honestly rather be bass fishing if it's in a good lake. Redfish are tasty though Mr. Green

I do like bass too, probably better. Just depends on how it's cooked. I don't like keeping bass too often, unless they are on the smaller side 14-17''

The big ones I just let go to grow bigger Cool

But I can say I ALMOST enjoy shark and red fishing as much as bass fishing.

Wish you could go for sure though!!

And I hope you recover well from your (insert type) surgery! We'll get another trip planned soon. I'll turn you into a bass fisherman after a few good ones from Fayette!

Yeah I haven't been to Fayette, but I have had some decent days on Bastrop. Bass fishing is far more tactical than coastal fishing, and I do like that aspect of it. However, those reds pull so hard. Sunday I was sight casting some flats with a Mann's waker and had a huge blowup that turned out to be a fat 24 inch red. I got to watch him make numerous runs and dive into thick grass beds while being towed on my yak. It's hard to beat that bass fishing, but topwater schoolies at Bastrop can be awesome too.

I do eat bass but have never kept anything larger than 16-17 inches. I think if I caught a bass over 21 inches from Bastrop that I would keep it for the dinner table, just to see how much meat it would produce. I've got a theory that 1/3 of bass is the boney head.

On a side note I had knee surgery so I'll be out of fishing for a good while. Then I start school in late August so I'm going to miss the hot season on Upper Laguna. Ohh well I'll tag a red next season.

Yeah knee surgery sucks. I had surgery in high school on a torn miniscus. Crutches for 3 months!

I could take you to get a tagged red no problem out at rollover. It's all in how you rig your bait and the size / what you use. I've had success with 2....yes 2 big yellowtail shad (dont know what they are actually called) rigged through the eyes, with slits cut all through them. Put them on a 6/0 owner circle hook on a coastal snap tied to a good steel leader with a 1 oz. weight for fishing the bottom.

Last trip my friend wouldn't listen to me and kept using one live shad. He was catching gafftop after gafftop. Finally he let me rig up his bait and in 5 min. he hooked up to a 40 in. red. Biggest he had ever caught.

Coincidence you ask? Nay says I. LOL

Hey.,.....the next time you go, throw a big crankbait for those reds and see if it gets hammered.

I'd be interested to see what the results would be

Something like this

I might try it one day. The big 7' Penn power stick and 209 Penn reel I fish with is more of a cast and let sit type of pole. :)

I don't take my good bass rod and reels out in the saltwater so I got the Penn setup just for that.

The Mann's waker is a crankbait that dives 3" below the surface and looks just like a distressed mullet in the flats. It's perfect for fishing shallow areas with possible reds. I also caught a 17 inch trout about 5 minutes before a 24 inch red. I started throwing the bait as a joke making fun of it and then it started getting smacked around. Try it out if you're out there in the flats, its fun to mess with. And if your top waters are getting snagged on grass its a decent alternative in that scenario as well.

I so want to hit the coast now....!!!!@&#*()@&#(*@Y&*(&Y!

The Waker is the shiznit. I am a big fan of that bait. I started throwing that bait a year or two ago and was hammering some big bass on it. Took it to the coast and wore the paint off of it. Fish destroy that bait!

Yep the the Mann's Wakers, Baby Wakers and Baby Minus 1 are all great for reds and trout. I switch the hooks out to single hooks to make them more weedless. There are a bunch of guys using the shallow running Bandit cranks too. The Rattletrap has long been used in the salt. And the big deep divers are great for kings and smacks in the gulf.
