I bought some senkos and bullet weights and needed some more worm hooks so I went to Academy planning on getting some Gamakatsu hooks since I heard great things about them being super sharp, etc. When I get there I find "Tournament Choice" worm hooks on sale:

25 for $1.88

and the Gamakatsu:

5 for ~$5.00

Both made in Japan, probably from the same metal, and possibly from the same factory. Is there really a difference in these hooks or is it all marketing? I don't want to be paying $1.00 a hook when I could be paying $.08 cents.

Redtarpon- Don't know what Academy you are shopping at but the Gamakatsu hooks should retail for $2.69 per 5, that's the price I paid last time I bought them, but I did buy them from Tackle Warehouse http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage-GOSWG.html. I also bought some of the Tournament Choice hooks last year to try out, but after missing fish after fish I came home and threw them in the trash. Spend the few extra bucks and get the Gamakatsu hooks and get the EWG worm hooks not the G-lock you'll put more fish in the boat Wink

Really? Holding a gamakatsu in one hand and a tournament choice in the other, I could tell no difference in the shape or sharpness or anything. I guess I can test them both out. I do see the advantage of the EWG hooks though.

I've had Gamakatsu's bent out before and the hook point was dull in more than a few packs. Daiichi and Owner are both way better IMHO

You know what................I have had the same thing happen to me lately with the Gammy's......................I wonder if they are doing something different during the manufacturing process. I lost a very good fish at the Falcon tournament when she bent my hook out Shocked ................. a brand new Gammy too.............. and I've also had the points bent after only a couple of fish lately too. Mad I haven't found a great replacement yet and I still have a ton of Gammy's......................but I'm still looking and if I can find a better hook, I'll slowly replace the Gammy's.......................sort of what I've been doing with my sinkers...................slowly getting rid of my lead and brass and replacing them with Tungsten.......................expensive, but worth it.
